Hello There!

Quite a few requests that I've read in the past few weeks have dealt with
research questions on people who have been written about in an immensely
valuable source; a book entitled: "Strangers in their Midst: The Free Black
Population of Amherst County, Virginia" written by Sherrie S. McLeroy and
William R. McLeroy. (Heritage Books/ 1993. This book is extremely rare and
hard to find.

I only have its index, and have thus far replied to e-mails giving the page
numbers to look up ancestors. I'd suggest that if you researching Amherst
County ancestors, do yourself a favor and give Heritage Books a call and
request that they reprint this book. They only printed a small amount of this
resource.

Also on the topic of Amherst County research, another valuable source is to
go to the following websites. They are extremely helpful.

1) http://www.multiracial.com/letters/plecker.html
2) www.angelfire.com/ar/freedmen (raji's website)
3) afrigeneas.com
4) www.african-nativeamerican.com

Also you may want to check out: Indexes of State Slave Schedules by
Geraldine Cook for the Virginia 1850 and 1860 Slave Schedule Indexes.
