"One of the tragedies of life is the murder of a beautiful theory by a brutal gang of facts" - La Rochefoucauld

Well, Neil.........I always enjoy a fun party :-)

I've been busy reassessing these dudes in view of this trespass case and can give you a few more facts to have fun with.

We had Henry Sr in Goochland with grants given in 1732-34-36. Nothing found to indicate he lived there in 1730. But he may have.

We have Henry Jr and Sam who were proven brothers but believed to be the sons of another Henry. Now you get a glimmer of a case of too many Henrys.

We know from Sam's will in mid 1700s that he owned land that straddled the Chesterfield/Cumberland [formerly Goochland] line, giving son Ben "of Cumberland" the land adjoining Sam's line in Chesterfield. We also know that Henry Jr, Sam's brother, lived very nearby on the Chesterfield side.

Yes, it's possible Sam was an absentee landlord of this Goochland land and that he sold it to either his brother [most likely] or his father. And if to his brother, he may not have lived on it either.

I'm now pretty convinced, although I need to review it carefully and regardless of which Henry [Sr or Jr] was involved in the 1730 trespass case, that Henry Jr and Sam were sons of Goochland Henry Sr and not the "other Henry."

So this seemingly meaningless question and the very interesting and important responses I've had may result in a really major adjustment of two Hatcher lines!

Stay tuned for my next silly question and thanks again........... :-)

Nel
