Good advice from everyone.  A good example of a name change is William Wells Brown because of a nephew who came to live with the Youngs who's name was William they changed his name. 

Once you suspect a owner you will have to run their family tree also.  Wills, inventory, deeds and other documents before you even get to where your family was born. 

Some of the sites mention you might find someone who has some of the information you are seeking.

When I was researching my family my grandfather said his mother was bought at auction in Lexington Kentucky as a wedding gift.  Once I ran the owner trees I found a son lived in that area.  I pulled all of his records and found a reference to her and who got married.  Just follow the money and you will find what you are looking for.
