There is no confusion whatsoever on the part of Mr. Barger as Mrs Mills
indicates. I did not seek to bring Mr. Mills's untimely death into the posting
because it adds nothing to the discussion of the Jefferson-Heminmgs DNA
fiasco. The choice of this "special issue" does bring many questions to my
mind however. At "one time" I too was a dedicated subscriber and ardent reader
of NGS Quarterly. In fact, I donated a copy of my book, "The Jefferson Family
of Virginia", to their library. A change of librarians shortly occured and
they could not find that donated copy so I again donated another copy. I know
of the fine work that NGS does, as well of that of Gary and Elizabeth Shown
Mills, but in my opinion they are just not the people to add research to the
Jefferson-Hemings issue, there was NO questioning of the genealogy part. Their
issue seems to me to be, that they weren't brought into the study in the
beginning and they choose to "tackle" the fine works of the 13 member blue
ribbon committee, known as Jefferson-Hemings Scholars Commission Report on the
Jefferson-Hemings Matter, April 12, 2001. I urge all to go to
www.tjheritage.org and read the report and to read, "Jefferson Vindicated"
which addresses the NGSQ need for a "special issue."

Mrs. Mills informs us of her and Gary's connection to the University of
Alabama. Please be advised that another world known outstanding Research
Professor of history at Alabama, Professor Forrest McDonald, was among the
distinguished 13 independent Scholars Commission. Professor McDonald sums up
his study and research by stating that he has entirely abandoned his earlier
assumption and in his own words in the Scholars Commission Report says,
"Thomas Jefferson was simply NOT GUILTY of the charge."

Herb Barger
Jefferson Family Historian

Elizabeth Shown Mills writes:

Mr. Barger, confusion exists only if one attempts to “connect dots” by
ignoring some of them. Insofar as the *NGS Quarterly* is concerned, a third
and critical event is omitted from the above chronicle: NGSQ's assistant
editor died suddenly a month after the issue hit the stands. (No, we do not
suspect poisoning and the Ghost of Mr. Jefferson did not haunt him to his
grave.)

During the 16 years that Gary and I edited the *NGS Quarterly,* we made at
least one academic advance for genealogy: we acquired for the journal an
academic base at the University of Alabama where Gary was a longtime
professor of history.
