this might be helpful regarding the Hollows of the Dan River ; and Tory activity

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Revlist/message/120205

plus if you google "hollows of the dan river" there are several links referencing it : and google: hollows "ararat river"

seems there is a area in Patrick Co (was part of Henry Co during Rev War) along the Ararat River and about five miles north of NC line known as :The Hollows". There is a Hollows Rd (Rt 672) and an web site of the history of this area: http://www.patrickchamber.com/profile.cfm?ID=385

The Dan River itself flows into NC in NW corner of Stokes Co, N.C (part of Surry Co until 1790). Stokes, Surry and Yadkin Co were hotbeds of Tory activity during the war and also Tories across the state line in modern Patrick and Carroll counties.

Either way, this Tory activity in the "Hollows" etc (whether on Dan River proper or on Ararat River) would have been somewhere in southwestern area of Patrick Co., and along and near VA/NC line

Bill, Do you have any additional information on:

orce to put down the Tories, then causing alarm in the hollows of Dan River, on
he North Carolina line. Shelton's men visited persons known to be disaffected

Dates? Specific events?
My Silas Wooten says in his pension application that he enlisted in March 1781
t Boyd's Ferry. My own research shows that to be a Ferry across the Dan River
bout where the railroad tracks cross the river at New Boston. Silas says that
his was on the Roanoke River.
Silas called the Dan River the Roanoke. A variant name for the Dan is the South
ranch of the Roanoke River. The question is: Was Silas a local? Was this
iver more often called the Roanoke in that time period than the Dan?
I also have a Jacob Elliott who lived on Pole Cat Creek on the border between
andoph County and Guilford County in NC in the period of the Revolutionary War
ho was involved with an incident with the Tories who came through his
eighborhood. Jacob was a Quaker and hoped to sit out the war. The incident
cared him and his family enough that they moved to Montgomery County, VA for
afety for the rest of the war. I am interested in knowing the time period that
he Tories were particularly active in northern NC .....trying to
ecruit.....and other details to fill out my "story" in this time period.
In addition my Salmons family and Hensley family would have been living in
ittsylvania/Henry area in this same time period. I have reason to be
nterested in any information about when and details of anything anyone has on
hese events. Marsha Moses

You may already have the information shown in the below "link," but this
ppears to be a rather informative post on GenForum that mentions the Henry,
iuguid and Robertson families in VA (along with some other associated
amilies):

Also, a member of my Davidson family named Giles Davidson (who was ultimately
resent at the surrunder of Cornwallis) served under Captain William Duiguid for
while, as shown below. Giles Davidson was a son of David Davidson and Mary
iles of Buckingham Co., VA (but David Davidson had been on the 1746 Goochland
o., VA tithe list).

DAVIDSON, GILES-Amherst, 21 Aug 1832. Born in Buckingham, 1762 (from the
amily register of his father, in possession of his brother Edward Davidson).
ent out three months under Capt. William Duiguid at Albemarle Barracks, being
ubstitute for Young Lee. He there enlisted under Capt. Garland Burnley for 12
onths as guard to British prisoners. Later he volunteered under Capt. Francis
helton, of Henry, who was raising a force to put down the Tories, then causing
larm in the hollows of Dan River, on the North Carolina line. Shelton's men
isited persons known to be disaffected to the American cause and prevented
njuries from tories. The headquarters was with a tory named McGowan, who lived
n Henry. In 1781 he went out from Buckingham for three months under Capt.
illiam Perkins, and was in the battles of Hot Water and Jamestown. He was at
nce called out again under Capt. Silas Watkins, who before Yorktown resigned
nd was succeeded by Capt. William Giles. Was present at Surrender of
ornwallis and helped to guard the prisoners to the Winchester Barracks, where
e was discharged about 1 Dec 1781. After the war he moved to Amherst Co, VA
nd was placed on the Virginia Pension roll at $76.66 per annum. Certificate
2920 was issued 17 Jun 1833. In Amherst Co on 17 Mar 1848, Giles Davidson,
esident of this county for about 40 years and previous thereto of Buckingham
ounty, appointed John A. Harris attorney to collect pension due from 4 Sep 1847
o 4 Mar 1848; witnesses W. C. Jordon, L. W. Christian.

 Best regards,

 Bill Davidson
