Anne,

I can highly recommend the 37 or 67 Y chromosome marker test at Family Tree 
DNA (FTDNA).  National Geographic uses them.  We have over 200 donors in the 
Davidson Project now, and over 700 donors in the Brown Project.  By the the 
way, if your surname has a "project," you should join via that project (that 
will give you the lower "group rate" at FTDNA).
