Dear Listfolks,

I am seeking information about the ancestors and children of James HODGES,
abt. 1725 to 1787, Lunenburg/Halifax counties, VA, and Newberry Co. SC -- my
6g-grandfather and brickwall.

This is being posted to seven lists and I apologize to those who get it
several times; however, it's time for me to move ahead on this part of my
family tree. I hope the more exposure this gets, the more likely that I will
make contact with descendants who can help.

At this point we have a good deal of information and documentation of Jesse
Hodges, a son of James Hodges and my 5g-grandfather, and his descendants.

The earliest information we have on James is that he was on the tithe list in
Lunenburg Co, in 1748. He later acquired land in the Bradley Creek area in
what is now the northwest portion of Halifax county. Our first record of
land acquisition was in 1752 and he continued to acquire land in the same
general area.

We also have two court records which identify children of James Hodges, and
some of their spouses.

The will of James Hodges was proven 5 June 1787 in Newberry Co. SC. It
identified his heirs as his wife, Martha, and children (1) Joseph, (2)
Christina, (3) Jesse, (4) Rebecca SHAW, and (5) Patty SHAW. Other legatees
were (1) Sarah GLASS, (2) and Toby GLASS. Witnesses were Reuben GOLDING,
George ELLIOT, Haley SHAW, and Joseph HODGES .

A chancery case in Halifax Co. VA in January 1799 was brought by William
Carr (comp.) against William GLASS and Sarah his wife, Robert Shaw and
Patsey his wife, Haily SHAW and Rebecca his wife, Jesse HODGES, Joseph
HODGES, Chainey HoDGES and James HODGES, heirs of James HODGES dec'd. (I
believe Chainey and Christina are the same person.)

There is evidence that James married a daughter of Abraham Echols; however at
least one researcher believes she may have been the daughter of Abraham's
son, Isaac. There is a good deal of uncertainty and disagreement about
whether James' wife was Rebecca or Martha, or both. The will of Abraham
Echols listed a daughter, Rebecca, but no Martha. Both the will and the
chancery case identify Martha as the wife.

The birth order of James' children has not been determined to my
satisfaction, so the order they are listed below may be incorrect. I did
receive a list several years ago that listed the children in the order I have
them but I think assumptions were made without adequate documentation. The
"old family bible" sure would come in handy on this point. One question I
have is whether the order children are listed on a will is evidence of birth
order. (i.e., is Joseph Hodges, who is listed first, likely to be the
youngest son or the oldest?)

So, please consider the following as data to investigate rather than
documented evidence.

I have additional information from one researcher that several of James
Hodges' children removed to Georgia. The following were included:

Joseph HODGES, Clark Co. GA, 1820 & 1830 census
Christiana HODGES, Jackson Co. GA - 1820 census
Hailey SHAW, Rebecca's hunband, DeKalb Co. GA - 1830 censaus
Robert Shaw, Patsy's hunband, Conval Co. GA 1830 census.

I was able to locate Joseph HODGES, Haily SHAW, and Robert SHAW on the
GeorgiaGenWeb site in census indices of the listed counties. I could not
locate Christiana Hodges under that name.

I need to research, confirm and provide adequate documentation on these. I
also need any help I can get from you. And, I really need more cousins,
especially those with answers. <grin>

Thanks a million!

Jim Hodges
