Dear VA-ROOTS subscribers who have AOL as their email service:

The VA-ROOTS listserv software has been reporting a possibility that all AOL accounts will be deleted from the listserv automatically because AOL is blocking current VA-ROOTS messages believing them to be spam. We have contacted AOL and asked them not to block messages from our address (listlva.lib.va.us) but that may take some time. Currently we have taken steps to stop the listserv software from automatically deleting users. This "fix" can only be applied for a short time, however.

We wanted to make you aware of the possibility of your AOL address may be deleted from the VA-ROOTS listserv. We don't believe that will happen very soon because of the changes we have made listed above, but it is still a possibility.

You might want to consider using another email account for all of your listserv accounts (i.e., gmail, Hotmail, etc.) We have had fewer issues with these email accounts than with AOL.

You might also want to contact AOL yourself to let them know that VA-ROOTS messages are not spam. When contacting them please mention that the VA-ROOTS listserv is receiving the following blocked message:

554 CON:B1

The IP address has been blocked due to a spike in unfavorable e-mail statistics.

We are not sure why there has been a "spike" in which AOL email accounts have been designating VA-ROOTS messages as spam. Again, we have contacted AOL about the problem, but it may take time to resolve. In the meantime, however, AOL accounts could be automatically deleted as spam. That's why it might be best to switch your email for your listserv accounts.

Please remember that the VA-ROOTS listserv and the AOL blocking are both automated functions. It's not a human at AOL looking at our messages but just an automated function doing the best it can. The same goes for the listserv automatically deleting people off the lists-it doesn't "read" why the messages are bouncing-just that they are.

If you have any questions, please contact me off the list at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
