This history combines the story of the construction of the Gordonsville - Newmarket Turnpike; the sketches, maps and quotes from the diary and letters of Jedediah Hotchkiss, map maker to General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson; Hotchkiss's first visit to the "gap"; the passage of 20,000+ soldiers from Jackson's Corp across the "gap" on their way to defend Fredericksburg; the discovery of the first Fisher to settle at now Fisher's Gap; and the story of the Milam who lived along the future Turnpike a century before it was built. And not least, the "controversy" the Park Service had in 1933 in naming these gaps.

I would like to thank the staff of the Library for their assistance with this research including the archivists and staff in the map room, reading room and collections. Without their assistance, this effort would not have been possible.
