My husband says "Honey, what are you doing on the computer now?" And I
usually reply, "Looking for dead people". Looking for dead people often connects
me with the living, either their descendants or others who are curious about
history - so to me, genealogy lives on.

Regarding the www: Google books is a genealogy treasure. Books from the
1800's are being archived to pdf file format. Last night on Google books, I
came across the diary of Henry Townsend and his entries for April 1865 where he
tells of his travels as a confederate soldier from Richmond west and then
south past Natural Bridge and Salem and then through Franklin County where he
stopped at the homes of the Turners, Prillamans, Dyers, and Helms on his way to
North Carolina. It was from the Southern Historical Papers. And reading
that I felt like I was there traveling with him on the old roads and crossing the
creeks to the homes of my cousins many times removed, and great uncles and
grandparents as they offered him food, a place to sleep, or directions on the
best road to take. It was a fascinating read as he and his fellow soldiers
came across a notice of Lee's surrender and weren't sure what to do.

Through other archived books from the 1800's, I have been able to find
pictures of two members of the family tree.
