The game was scare because they were on a island. The whole basis for the
colony was to supplement rations from England with trading with the natives.
Powhaten decided to end the trading to try to starve them out because he
know that the ships would be long in coming. It wasn't until later John
Rolfe came and start producing a cash crop, tobacco, that the colony succeeded.

The English settlers wouldn't have had those options. The disappearance of
the first colony would have been fresh in their minds. I can understand
why they wouldn't have ventured far - even to look for food - just in case
supplies arrived from London.

I saw the article before Mr. Tarlton posted it. I do not believe the
Indian's did it. One must not forget - the Indian's were very self
sufficient..We were not.
