Anyone have a quick History for Dummies type explanation of whose side of
what the 'Covenanters'  as referred to in Rev. Slaughter's paragraph
below, were on?

"...His grandfather was Robert Spotswood, Lord President of the College
of Justice, and author of the "Practicks of the Laws of Scotland", who
was one of the eight eminent lawyers executed by the Parliament of
Scotland, which (according to Sir Walter Scott) consisted wholly of
Covenanters.  "

This would be the year 1746 that Spotswood was executed.  I get crazy
parsing Slaughter's sentences and also want to be absolutely sure the
Covenanters Scott is referring to are the members of Parliament not the
lawyers...
