This location is right in the heart of what is today Virginia Commonwealth
University Medical Center.  Originally the hospital was an extension of
Hampden Sydney College and was established in Richmond (1838).  The original
permanent address for the hospital was in the Egyptian Building a few blocks
over from East Clay Street on Marshall Street where it took up residence in
1844.  Then in 1854 the school of medicine was turned over to the state of
Virginia at which time it became the Medical College of Virginia.  A rival
medical school was set up a few blocks away called the University College of
Medicine.  It opened McGuire Hall as a hospital in 1912 (1112 E. Clay
Street).  Then in 1913 the University College of Medicine and Medical
College of Virginia merged and it retained the name Medical College of
Virginia up until 2000 at which time it became the Virginia Commonwealth
University Medical Center or as we call it VCU Medical Center.
