My last Dickenson (Dickerson) is Ann who married Robert Reade Tompkins in Caroline County, VA in
1765. Ann's parents were Griffith Dickinson (1715-1786) and Ann Cosby (1720-1795).

I was reviewing some documents that I found at a visit to the Archives in April 2017 and found a surprise.

I was looking for records on several early colonial families that lived present day Grayson [Reeves, Burton and Phipps] and Russell Counties [Taylor, Sword): As you know, this requires looking at records of the “parent” counties, including Augusta, Botetourt, Fincastle, Montgomery and Washington counties. During my search, I have tried to take note of many allied names that lived with my ancestors in the same place and time.

One of the many names was Dickenson, especially Henry, Humphrey Dickenson, and James Archelaus Dickenson; these brothers were from Prince Edward County and settled in the Castle Woods area on the Clinch. Another cluster of Dickensons: Griffith, Obediah, Elijiah and Moses appear on Botetourt list of tithables 1770-1782. These two groups may be related.

My surprise was a Massachusetts land deed in in Local government Montgomery Court Records Judgments, Commonwealth Causes and Misc. Court Records 1753-1873 box 1 Barcode number 1048926, folder Montgomery County Land Records,1753-1805. It is a Deed of Obediah Dickenson of Northfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts to Richard E. Cott of Pittsfield land in Dalton, Berkshire, Massachusetts dated 1795. How did this deed show up in Montgomery County, Virginia? It is also a surprise since most of what I have read of the Dickensons have their origins in colonial Virginia.

I would be interested in your thoughts on the document.
