As you are no doubt aware, this is a French name.  It was
more commonly spelled Chastain.  Sometimes Shasteen, etc.
There were a large group of French who came to Goochland
(now Powhatan) County in early 1700's as free land had been
set aside for them.  Genealogies have been published on
many of these French families. Check the Virginia State
Library's [LVA] on-line catalog. Also check the Hugenot
records.


Virginia Patent Bk 10:266.
     Patent to Peter [Pierre] Chastaine, 111 acres in Henrico
Co on S side James R; adj. Anthony Malloone; his own land;
. . . part of first 5,000 acres surveyed for the French
refugees. 23 Mar 1715.

    Patent to Capt. Peter Chastain . . . Henrico Co on W side
Jones Cr, on S side James River . . . For importing Mary
Chastain, Jane Chastain, Peter Chastain, Junr. & Walter Beatle.
9 July 1724.
