Dear Mr. Simpson:

Your recent e-mail to VA-ROOTS has been brought to my
attention and I would
like to clarify the policy of my office regarding
genealogical research.

First, let me say that we have no record of having received
your request of
two months ago for copies of documents.  If you had
contacted me directly at
that time, I would have been happy to be of assistance.

Second, I have not forbidden deputies to copy documents for
genealogists.  We
are glad to provide copies of specific documents to
genealogists, just as we
do for other members of the public.

Once we are given book and page numbers, we will inform a
requester of
copying and postage costs.  When funds have been received,
the documents will
be promptly mailed.

Due to limited staff we cannot, however, perform
genealogical research to
locate documents, but will be pleased to pass such requests
to a local
researcher who can discuss the matter.

It would be appreciated if you would forward this e-mail to
VA-ROOTS so that
they will have the correct information available.
