My mother's male cousin (who is a "biological Mr. Smith"....though he was
born with the surname of "Brown," thanks to an "adoption" back in the early
1800s) has something like 600-700 "close matches" from his Family Tree DNA
(FTDNA) Y chromosome DNA test at just the "12 marker level," and those
matches are to many, many different surnames. That male cousin has only 3
"close matches" at the "37 marker level," however, and they are all to other
Mr. Smiths (and all four men "trace back" to the Alexander Smith who died in
Middlesex Co., VA around 1691). That is why doing at least 37 markers when
taking the Y chromosome test through FTDNA (or other testing companies) is
so important (and even more markers are better still).
