Hi Ken. I am trying to find out who the Father of the William that marries Elizabeth COCKE in Goochland in 1774 is. This William lives in Louisa on a property he purchases in 1769 (do not have the Deed, but it is mentioned in a Book I have and he pays land taxes on it in Louisa), Attonce, which is right across the Goochland border where Elizabeth COCKE's family lives & the Goochland HODGES that were related to Welcome William HODGES live (Welcome dies, as you have his Will below, in 1771/2).

I believe this William is also the one that sells 100 acres of land with Welcome William HODGES in 1771 in Goochland, right before Welcome dies. This William is identified as William, JR., living in Trinity Parish in Louisa, which was on the border of Goochland and where Attonce was located.

You may have sent some of this information earlier this year Ken. Welcome William HODGES had three Sons, Benjamin, b. ~ 1727, William, b. ~ 1733 and Jesse b. ~ 1735 (these dates are arrived at by when tithables show up in Welcome William's household. All the Sons were born in Goochland, but perhaps Benjamin was born in the Goochland part of Henrico before Goochland was formed).

The marriage for Benjamin in 1762 shows he could not have had a Son to enable him to marry Elizabeth COCKE in Goochland in 1774, unless Benjamin was married earlier.

William, b. 1732/33, could have had a Son William if he is the one that marries Susan LOVELL (your information below and on ancestry.com) or Martha PLEASANTS (on ancestry.com) in 1756.

Jesse could have had a Son named William that was also b. ~ 1756 too, but I can't find a marriage for him.

Most, not all, males got married after they became tithable at 21 back then I believe, and the Sons of Welcome William do not seem to be the most logical for having a William married to Elizabeth COCKE in 1774 in Goochland therefore. There is no tithable William showing up in Benjamin, William or Jesse's households in the 1753 - 1760 time frame either.

The most logical Father for the William that married Elizabeth COCKE in 1774 is Welcome William HODGES' Son William, and not one of his Grandsons. He would have been around 40 in 1774. This could have been a second marriage for him as he might have been the William that married Susan LOVELL (although I think Susan's William was one born to John HODGES in ~ 1733 in Goochland, because of the naming patterns of their Children reported on ancestry.com/rootsweb.com searchs) or Martha PLEASANTS (I don't have any record of this marriage except for a reference on ancestry.com/rootsweb.com searchs).

This William, whoever he belongs to, is living in Louisa and has a Son, William HODGES, JR., that marries an Elizabeth COCKE in Goochland in 1795 (the Father William is identified as William SR. in the record below). Perhaps this William HODGES, JR. is the offspring of an earlier marriage, or he marries his first Cousin, the niece of his Mother (I know who the Parents are for the two Elizabeth COCKES).

I believe this William HODGES, JR. is the f/o my GGGG Grandfather William S. [Samuel (?), after his Mother's Brother Samuel COCKE] HODGES, who married Martha/Mary HALL in Louisa and died in Louisa in 1832 (I have his Will). This is the link I'm trying to prove, as well as the link of William HODGES' Father (the one who married Elizabeth COCKE in Goochland in 1774) to Welcome William HODGES.

Thanks for your help Ken. Any comments by anyone receiving this e-mail would be appreciated.

Best regards, Tim
