If nothing more, Marilyn, you will gain a "where" for that ancestor; where he joined the service or and to what place his pension was sent. Further, you very often will gain the name of the military unit - company, regiment, brigade, corps, etc. - in which he served, that information often leading to much more very interesting information and background.

Then too, as Ms. Julia mentioned, widows were required not only to set forth details of the service of the husband or son through whom that woman claimed benefits, but in addition she was required to reveal those facts of marriage or paternity that entitled her to the rewards. Those personal details are not often to be found in applications by the veterans themselves.

Finally, if bounty land was awarded the veteran, the "where" of that land may be most important to you, especially if he settled that tract.

  Marilyn
The pension records have a wealth of information, especially, if the widow
  applied for a pension.

Has anyone found any information of value in War of 1812 military
records? All those I have obtained contain little more than verification
the man was there, possibly dates and pay info. Rev. War records
and records from the War Between the States, on the other hand, have
a wealth of information, sometimes including a physical description
  of the applicant.
