For your interest, in 1796 the NC Legislature ordered that the present
US 70 (I-40) should be widened to 20 feet through the Smokys and the
Cumberland Mts. so as to accommodate a wagon and a two animal team.
It was, and the "Crab Orchard Hotel" was built at Crab Orchard just
west of the Gap and opened for business in that same year - 1796.  The
foundation of that "hotel"/inn was still there in the middle 1990s.
