I agree with the stated problem. I started working on my families genealogy
in the late 60's and 70's. When I first started using Family Tree Maker
and predecessors to Ancestry.com I put some of my initial info online. Since
then I may have either disproved that data or found it to be partially in
error. It now seems to be fact and is being deseminated by individuals I
have never corresponded with. Ancestry.com needs a way for researchers to
question data online where the source is no longer valid or to be nice the
source is stubborn. Very few researchers give away their sources or references.
How do we verify data? How do we challenge data? Why are some putting data
online based on hearsay?
I no longer put my data online. I have data on hundreds of early
Robertsons of VA, Pa, NC, SC, Mi and the east coast. I also have similar data on
Claytons and Wise and Searles.

I have found a number of errors in my family lines posted on Ancestry.com
I have tried to make contact with the person who posted the information,
but it is not always possible. I cannot determine if there is a way to
make corrections on line. If anyone knows if this is possible, please share
the process.
When using the Family Tree Maker on-line search feature, the information
that comes back as World Tree (from Ancestry) as the source is often very
wrong. Sometimes I think that no information would be better than
speculation and wild guesses.
