 I came up with this:

8 miles (13 km) (7 nautical miles) AS THE CROW FLIES

Initial heading from Halifax to Scottsburg:
east (92.8 degrees)
Initial heading from Scottsburg to Halifax:
west (272.9 degrees)

If you had PO addresses, you could find distance more
accurately on any good map program on yahoo or google.
