....Question to experienced researchers:  Is it foolish or ill-advised of me
to use information I find online as "tentatively my tree" until I can verify
it with original documents or whatever will suffice to verify it?  Is there
something wrong with this idea?

It is in no way foolish, Cynthia, IF, IF, IF, you do as you say and follow
up with more reliable records.  

I surely would suggest that you not ever represent such findings as factual
until that follow-up is accomplished, and you should tell all with whom you
share these limited findings that you have used sources that are often
unreliable.
