A good source for understanding the origin and division of Virginia  
parishes is Parish Lines, Diocese of Southern Virginia by Charles  
Francis. It includes maps, brief histories, and references to the  
legislation that established the parish lines. There is a companion  
volume for southwestern Virginia.
