Can someone help me understand the status of people having the titles of:
Planter; Gent.; (sometimes) Yeoman; Esquire; etc.? I see these titles used
in deeds, security bonds, etc. It seems that an individual could progress
from no title, to Planter, to Gent., with Yoeman and Esq. used occaisionally.
I assume it defines their status, but is it money, education, land owned or
similiar that is the criteria?
Thanks for any clues.
