We get several emails a month concerning the meanings for the various notations for names in the tax lists. Most of them describe an occupation, a location, etc. While working on the Wythe County Personal Property tax lists we ran across one notation that caused a chuckle or two. It is for a Jacob King. Here's the 2 listings:

King, Jacob
King, Jacob (Hairy)

I guess even the tax collector could have a sense of humor !!
