The book by Charles Sublett on the 57th Virginia Infantry states the
following:
"Organized by Edward T. Bridges, the 'Franklin Fireaters' enlisted June 21,
1861, for one year. It served as 'Unattached Light Infantry' during the
months of July and August. On September 16, 1861, it joined Keen's Battalion
and served as Company D until the organization of the 57th Virginia. Bridges
remained in command only for a short time. Owing to an unexplained incident
with the quartermaster in December 1861, regimental authorities ordered
Bridges under arrest. Since no record of imprisonment exists, it is presumed
that following his trial he returned home to Franklin County.
After Bridges' 'retirement', four months passed before the appointment of
another captain. On May 7, 1862, David P. Heckman assumed the reins of
company command. He held that position until July 5, 1863, promotion to
major. Although wounded at Gettysburg, Heckman continued on duty until his
capture at Dinwiddie Courthouse during the last days of the war.
Chares H. Jones became Company C's last captain. He had enlisted June 21,
1861, and had rendered good service as a sergeant. After his promotion to
captain, he served until his capture at Dinwiddie Courthouse."
