One of the more startling and disturbing events of the late 19th century was the outbreak of riots subsequent to the mayoral elections in Wilmington, NC in November 1898. Given that racial tensions were a key component of the uprising, the Newspaper Project offers the unique perspective from an African American newspaper published in Virginia that spoke out loudly against what it saw as outright atrocities.
