Does anyone know the various areas of Virginia that were associated with
the various military units/militias in the War if 1812? I known that
Dickinson's 3rd VA Regiment recruited men out of the Campbell Co., VA
area, and several Davidsons were in that unit. "Major Perkin's Command,
Virginia Militia" included two Davidson men who I believe lived in Charles
City Co., VA. "Flying Camp" (McDowell's) Virginia Militia seems to have
been out of the Rockbridge/Botetourt area, based on the Davidsons who were
in that unit. The 7th VA Regiment (Gray's) militia seems to have
recruited in the Buckingham Co., VA area, based on the two Davidson men in
that unit (but I am not as sure about that as the others above).

My questions are on the following specific units:

1) The 5th VA Regiment included several Davidsons, and based on some of
the names, this unit MAY have been out of the Bedford and/or Washington
Co., VA area, but I am not sure about that. Does anyone know?

2) The 4th Regiment, Virginia Militia, included a Reubin (Reuben?)
Davidson and a Joseph Davidson, and my 3rd ggf was named Reuben Davidson
and his brother was Joseph Davidson. They lived in the
Cumberland/Goochland Co., VA area, but most of the other Davidson names in
that unit are not familiar to me (so this Reubin/Reuben and Joseph
Davidson COULD have been from some other Davidson family). Does anyone
know where this unit originated? One record shows a "Washington's 4th VA
Regiment," but I don't know if that was a separate/different unit.

Finally, there was a Captain William Davidson mentioned in the War of 1812
pension record for a man, and a Captain William Davidson died in Botetourt
Co., VA in late-1829 (though I have no proof that this was the same
Captain William Davidson). Based on a few records, it SEEMS LIKELY that
Captain William Davidson was the William Davidson, Junior who was born in
Botetourt around 1777 to William Davidson, Senior and his wife Martha
Baker. Captain William Davidson/William Davidson, Junior apparently
fought in the War of 1812 in Norfolk, VA and decided to stay in Norfolk
after the war (where he became a "respected merchant," per a letter that
was written by a descendant). His mother, Martha (Baker) Davidson, died
in Botetourt in early-1829, so maybe Captain William Davidson/William
Davidson, Junior went back to Botetourt from Norfolk at that time. In any
case, does anyone have any information on a military unit in VA (that was
stationed in Norfolk) in the War of 1812 that included a Captain William
Davidson? Captain William Davidson/William Davidson, Junior APPEARS to
have been the father of Captain William Baker Davidson (1815 West Point
graduate), and Captain William Baker Davidson (killed in Florida in 1840)
was the father of General John Wynn "Black Jack" Davidson (Union; West
Point graduate) and Commander Hunter Davidson (Confederacy; Naval Academy
graduate). Thanks!
