I recently posted a brief sketch of John FLEET, of Lancaster Co., VA in an
attempt to compile an accurate listing of his children.  I now provide an
updated account of his children and welcome any comments or additional data
regarding any of them.

John FLEET (1724-1793), of Lancaster Co., VA was the son of William and Ann
(Jones) Fleet; grandson of Henry and Elizabeth (Wildey) Fleet; and
great-grandson of Henry Fleete, the immigrant founder of the Fleet family in
colonial Virginia.

John Fleet married Mary Edwards, 29 May  1746 (bond), in Lancaster Co., VA.
The will of John Fleet was written 12 Jul 1792 and was recorded 17 Jun 1793
in Lancaster Co., VA (Will Book 22, p. 385).  His will names the following
heirs:

wife:  Mary Fleet
son:  John Fleet and his heirs
daughter:  Elizabeth Christian
daughter:  Dolly Fleet
daughter:  Judy Fleet

Bequests to John, Mary, Lucy, Richard, Ann, and Benjamin Ingram
Note:  The Ingram children were likely grandchildren of John Fleet, being
children of Thomas and Sally (Fleet) Ingram.

Executors:  wife, John Fleet, and John Christian

Witnesses:  Charles Ingram and Robert Hill

W. G. Stanard in his sketch of the Fleet family, published in 1895 in THE
VIRGINIA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY, volume two, pages 70-76 names
more children than are named in John Fleet's will.  It would appear he was
utilizing an unspecified family record.   Stanard lists the following
children for John Fleet:


1.    Henry Fleet
2.    John Fleet
3.    Polly Fleet
4.    Sally Fleet
5.    Ann Fleet
6.    Elizabeth Fleet
7.    Polly Fleet (sic)
8.    Judith Fleet


Utilizing the Stanard data and the will of John Fleet, we may list the
following children for John and Mary (Edwards) Fleet, of Lancaster Co., VA.

1.  Henry Fleet;  Predeceased his father and did not marry.   His will was
written 20 Dec 1785 and recorded 15 Oct 1787 in Lancaster Co., VA (Will Book
22, p. 157).  He left his property to his sister, Ann Hinton.  Thomas Ingram
served as a witness.

2.  John Fleet;   Named in his father's will, serving as a co-executor.
Several online sites give this John Fleet a birth date of 1785, which is
clearly incorrect.    John Fleet served as co-executor of his father's will,
which was written in 1792 and recorded in 1793.   John Fleet was clearly a
generation older than the 1785 birth date which is incorrectly attributed to
him by some online sources.

3.  Polly Fleet; married John Carter.  Left Lancaster Co., VA settling in
western VA and moved to North Carolina following her husband's death.

4.  Sally Fleet; married Thomas Ingram, 16 Apr 1772.  Thomas Ingram served as
witness to the will of his brother-in-law, Henry Fleet.

5.  Ann Fleet;  married Henry Hinton, 23 Jun 1766 (bond), in Lancaster Co.,
VA.

6.  Elizabeth Fleet;  Identified as Elizabeth Christian in the will of her
father.  Likely the wife of John Christian, named as a co-executor of John
Fleet's will.  Many researching this family have incorrectly identified her
as "Elizabeth Christian Fleet," not recognizing "Christian" was her married
surname.  This was apparently a second marriage for Elizabeth Fleet, as she
is recorded as marrying Nicholas Pope, 22 Jan 1772 (bond) in Lancaster Co.,
VA with the consent of her father, John Fleet.

7.  Polly Fleet (sic); undoubtedly intended to be Dolly Fleet.  Named in the
will of her father, identified by her maiden surname.   However, Dolly Fleet
is recorded as marrying Christopher Johnson, 19 Jul 1781, in Lancaster Co.,
VA.

8.  Judith Fleet;  Apparently unmarried at the time her father's will was
written, 12 Jul 1792.

9.  Lucy Fleet;  She is not identified by Stanard as a daughter of John and
Mary (Edwards) Fleet nor is she identified in John Fleet's will.  However, a
Lucy Fleet is recorded as marrying John Smallwood, 16 Jun 1781 (bond) in
Lancaster Co., VA.  There would appear to be no other Fleet family to which
she would belong in Lancaster County.
