It is possible that the individual counties set their own standards for 
teachers and for length of school year.    Even in the 1930s some rural 
schools only ran for 8 months and some teachers were only high school 
graduates.  My aunt taught in Suffolk before WW-I and had not been to 
college at all.

My grandmother was born in 1890. She graduated from high school, went to 
summer school at UVA, getting a teaching certificate, and began teaching in 
the fall. She taught for only a year, because she married, and married women 
were not allowed to teach.

My Grandmother taught elementary school in Stuarts Draft, Augusta
County, in 1920 plus and minus a few years.

I do not know how much formal education that she had received growing
up.  I was wondering if anyone might know what the education and other
requirements were that were in effect at that time in order for someone
to teach school.
