Subject: curry thread

This will be my last email regarding Mack Curry for awhile.....I've got to
get some other things done....tis the season.

I have found 13 additional families who originated in Albemarle Co., VA,
which is located in the piedmont area east of the Blue Ridge, that ended up
on the west side of the mountain in the New Hope to Port Republic area
according to the *1866* Census of Children of Ceased Cohabitation - Augusta
Co, VA. (New Hope is about 10 miles south of Port Republic, the site of
the confluence of the North and South Rivers that form the South Fork of
the Shenandoah.)

Where there are rivers there is commerce....jobs in milling, jobs on the
river. There was an important river business at Port Republic ...
gundalows carrying local commerce up river to Harper's Ferry, where the
Shenandoah becomes the main tributary of the Potomac River.

There were active iron ore furnaces along the Blue Ridge; tunnels were
being dug through this part of the Appalachian mountain to accommodate
trains. Work continued on roads through the gaps...!

The soil was good for farming. Large farms needed hired hands. Between
these various enterprises there were good employment opportunities for both
farmers and laborers.

I don't think Mack Curry just wandered into town one day.....I think the
word spread in the black community in Albemarle about plenty of jobs and
good land in the Valley along these rivers. Why there were free blacks
cloistered in Albemarle is left for another day. Anyone know any good
books on the subject? I'd love to read more about the black community in
Albemarle.

Thanks for all the input. Now where is all that stuff on my own family
that I was working on before this Curry thing popped up?
m.
