Ella,

Order Books for Prince William Co. go back to 1754 and some are indexed.
They are available on microfilm from the Library of Virginia and can be
borrowed via ILL.

To check the collection:

1) Check the Library of Virginia website: http://www.lva.lib.va.us/

2) Click on "what we have" in the middle of the blue section.

3) Scroll down and click on "County and City Records."

4) Under Collection Guides, click on "A Guide to Virginia County and City
Records on Microfilm."

5) At the top of the page, click on "List of Counties and Cities."

6) Scroll down the alphabetical list and click on "Prince William County."

7) Either click on "Court Records" or scroll down the page till you reach
"Court Records: County Court."

8) The 1st column notes the film number (e.g., "Prince William 25"); the
2nd column notes that the film can be requested via ILL; the 3rd column
provides a detailed description of the contents of the film.

Happy hunting,
Mary Beth McKimmy

Subject: 1759-1761 PR WM CO ORDER BOOK

I have a question re the following: In The Virginia Genealogist of Jan-Mar
1978 there is an index to:
Prince William County, Virginia, ORDER BOOK 1759-1761

In Court Session of March 24, 1761, pg 255( my 5th great grandfather JOHN
CHESHIRE)

Leonard Helm vs John Cheshire. On petition. It is considered that the
plaintiff ought to recover f 4.19.11 current money.

The amount being small potatoes, I am sure there is no more info in this
court records on John Cheshire (Chesher). So, are there earlier Order Books
for Prince William County that are indexed? Our estimated birth for this
5th gr grandfather is 1740 in VA? No reliable source. His son, also named
John Chesher, was born in 1760 and he lived until he was in his ninties.

I am open to suggestions of any records (on microfilm?) that I can order on
ILL around
the mid 1700's.
