Such losses are substantial, however ALL should remember that thousands of the counties have fine websites, and those will take you as close as you can get to local records.  Find those sites through Google (search, per e.g., "Southampton Co, VA genealogy"), join the local societies (they cost only a very few dollars), post queries and local "chats", avail yourselves of EVERYTHING there offered, and try one day to visit the counties most important to your personal research.

  I certainly agree with you Cynthia, and would include TLC Genealogy
  publications as well. These were two of the best record resources available
  to Virginia researchers and are a terrible loss.
