I think that young widows, unless they happened to have property of their
own, needed to remarry.  I know that one of my ancestors married a widower
soon after her first husband died.  She was left with 6 young children and
the second husband had 5 youngsters of his own.  They were married less than
6 months after the death of the first husband.
