The Isaac Smith family lived between Middletown, VA and Stephen City, VA
a.k.a. Newtown, Stephensburg in the Shenandoah Valley.

 Isaac had five sons:

John W. Smith, b. 1820 served 4 years - Co. H 13th Va – enlisted Camp Blair
8/12/61

Daniel William Smith, b. 1821 supposedly served 4 years – record not found.
(Known as D. William or William.)

Thomas Jefferson Smith, b. 1824

Benjamin F. Smith, b. 1832 served 4 years – Co. A 1st Va Cavalry – enlisted
Newtown 4/19/61

James M. Smith, b. c. 1841 is the subject of this query. James M. is 9 in
the 1850 census, 19 in 1860 census and then disappears. I long assumed he
also served in the Civil War and died therein. I recently found his
sister's obituary confirming my reasoning. It states: "One brother lost his
life in the Confederate Army." Since all other brothers long survived the
war, James must be the subject in the obit.

I have checked the local library in the Virginia Regimental Series…they do
not have a complete set….and did not find James M. Smith. Of course he
could be recorded as just James Smith.

Needless to say, I would appreciate any help (sources) finding James M. or
his brothers, Daniel and Thomas!

Thanks for listening.

M. Preston
