Many libraries have a subscription to Fold3. And we can actually access it 
on our home computers by signing into the library with our library card. 
Check with your local library before "joining" anything!

I suggest you join Fold3.com.   I tried getting an uncles WWII records but
since I was not a direct descendant they were not available to
me....regardless that he had no children and that I am the oldest living
kin.
