Diplomatic correspondence often offers a frank analysis of events in one 
country by the agents of another. If you read anything about the recent 
WikiLeaks episode, you’ll know why it is meant to stay secret for many years. 
Letters by a French diplomat in Richmond on the eve of the Civil War offered 
Paris that same dispassionate analysis and gives us a unique point of view of 
the events, attitudes, and arguments swirling around Virginia in the period
