Sorry, I wasn't bashing the data.  I should add that changing borders  
and disputed state lines had to have been confusing to the  
inhabitants. If your information was less than current you could  
easily tell someone you lived in a neighboring state.

I had ancestors born in Amelia Co VA that could have been almost  
anywhere by today's definitions. Not knowing exactly where/when they  
were talking about has driven a bunch of us to distraction.
