Early 20th century volumes of the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography
contain brief abstracts or transcripts of 17th century records of the
Council and General Court, usually accompanied by long genealogical notes on
persons named in the records.

Only a comparatively small portion of the original records survive.
Virtually all that survive are to be found in the revised edition of H. R.
McIlwaine's MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL AND GENERAL COURT OF COLONIAL VIRGINIA,
which the Virginia State Library (now the Library of Virginia) published in
1979. The revised edition includes material not available for publicaiton in
the original 1924 edition plus notes taken from General Court records before
their destruction on 3 April 1865.
