NEW DATABASES ADDED 

TO DIGITAL LIBRARY 

 

*        Prince William County Inventors, compiled by Tish Como, from
the records of the U.S. Patent Office,1790-1939. 

*        Prince William County People, 1701-1782, compiled by Greg
Mason.  Now includes data from the recently-found 1701 Stafford County
militia muster and from the 1782 personal property tax list.  Contains
the names of many African Americans. 

*        Dumfries Store Index, 1758-1776.  Customers to the store of
John Glassford and Company, in Dumfries, Virginia, compiled by Margaret
Binning incorporating various indexes and abstracts.  Customers came
from throughout northern Virginia. 

*        Manassas Industrial School Personnel, 1894-1982.  Updated lists
of staff and students of Prince William's first black secondary school. 

*        Updates to existing databases of Historic Sites, Photographs,
and Vital Records.

"RELIC AFTER DARK," 

SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 29, 

FEATURES MEGAN SMOLENYAK 

 

          The eighth annual "RELIC After Dark" will be held at Bull Run
Regional Library on Saturday, September 29.  The featured speaker for
the evening is renowned genealogist Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak.   She is
the author of six books, including Hey America, Your Roots Are Showing,
and Who Do You Think You Are? (the companion book to the popular
television series).  She has appeared on national television many times,
solving forensic mysteries and tracing the ancestry of celebrities.  See

talk will be "Cases That Made My Brain Hurt."     

This gala event will last from 7 to 11 p.m.  In addition to the featured
speaker, it includes a hot buffet dinner with assorted beverages and
desserts, an opportunity to learn about and use RELIC's genealogical
facilities, and complimentary printing from the library's microfilm and
electronic resources.  Space is limited so early registration is
recommended.  We suggest dressy casual attire.  Checks should be made
payable to Prince William Public Library System (or PWPLS), with "RELIC

RELIC PROGRAMS 

 

Here are our latest offerings.  Funding for RELIC programs is provided
by the Friends of Central and Bull Run Libraries.  Sign language
interpretation is available for Prince William Public Library programs
if requested at least three weeks in advance.  To be notified of

GENEALOGY 201:  BEYOND THE BASICS

Genealogy 101 introduced basic resources and techniques for researching
your family's history.   Genealogy 201 presents alternate resources to
enhance your family's history and advanced search techniques to help
maximize your results from online databases including census records,
passenger lists, maps, and books.   RELIC's Tish Como will present this
program on Thursday, July 12,  at 11 a.m., in the Bull Run Library
community room.

"IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK" - 

RESEARCHING LAND TITLES 

AND THE HISTORY OF YOUR HOME 

Presented by Don Wilson 

 

RELIC's Don Wilson will demonstrate how to use the records available to
us to discover when a house was built and the history of the land.  The
chain of ownership may go back hundreds of years.  You can also use this
technique to learn where your ancestors lived.  This program will be
presented on Tuesday, July 24, at 7 p.m. at Bull Run Regional Library
and will last about an hour.

SECOND CAMPAIGN OF MANASSAS - AUGUST 1862 

Presented by Ron Mayer 

 

Military historian Ron Mayer will use visual aides to tell why and how
the Second Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) occurred and to explain the
ramifications of the actions of the two competing Generals, Lee and
Pope.  This is the 150th anniversary of that major Civil War campaign. 

Ron Mayer is a retired Air Force officer, a member of the Bull Run Civil
War Roundtable and founded the Heritage Hunt Civil War Discussion Group.


            This program will be presented on Thursday, August 9, at 11
a.m. at Bull Run Regional Library and will last about an hour.  It will
be repeated on Tuesday, August 21, at 7 p.m.  To reserve a seat for this

GENEALOGY 101 

Presented by Beverly Veness 

 

Those curious about their family history have an opportunity to learn
about methods, strategies and resources for tracing their roots at a
free session sponsored by RELIC.  The hour-long program, conducted by
Beverly Veness of the RELIC staff, is scheduled for Tuesday, September
25, 2012, at 7 p.m.  This program, "Genealogy 101," will highlight the
numerous free genealogical resources available at RELIC and will explore
basic techniques for tracking ancestors.

"Genealogy Doctor" Accepting Appointments for Research Help 

 

Don Wilson, head of RELIC (the Ruth E. Lloyd Information Center for
genealogy and local history at Bull Run Regional Library), sets aside
time each month for  free private sessions to mentor persons researching
their family history.  A thirty-minute session can be used to discuss
and analyze an historical or genealogical problem that has stumped you.


 

Daytime and evening hours are possible.  To set up an appointment,
