Hello:

Could someone tell me who owned Amherst County slaves Emily, Pompey, and
Lucy Stuart? Emily gave birth to Pompey in August 1859. Emily & Pompey left
Amherst County at some point and lived in Rockbridge County. Lucy J. Stuart
was born in Rockbridge County about 1861. The tricky thing is, I don't know
if Emily was a Stuart at birth. She could have been a Burch or a Coleman (see
1850 Amherst Census, entry 182/183 line 28) or had a different surname. Since
I could not find any Stuart/Stewart/Steward slaveowners in Amherst County in
1850 I started looking for ANY Emily/ Emely listings since I had nothing else
to go by.

If you have obtained what the Seattle Public Library has, this may make a big
difference. They have (written by Geraldine Cook) the Virginia 1850 Slave
Schedule Index (published in 1988) and the Virginia 1860 Slave Schedule Index
(published in 1990). They got these documentations from: Genealogical
Services, Inc., P.O. Box 1227, West Jordan, Utah 84084-1227 (801) 280-1554.
They have other states as well. They are shelved at the Temporary Central
Library.

Also looking for a Sawney Stewart/Sawney Steward of Amherst County. Perhaps
he married Emily; my great great great grandmother. If anyone has "Strangers
In Their Midst" by Sherrie & William McLeroy, could you look on pages 88 and
99 and tell me what it says about Sawney Stewart/Steward.

Thank you!
B.L. Hudson
