In addition to the books previously mentioned, (in my opinion) all family historians and genealogists (professional or not) should have two books nearby for reference.  These may be readily available at your nearest library reference department.

1)  Elizabeth Shown Mills, Evidence!  Citation & Analysis for the Family Historian. (Baltimore, Genealogical Publishing Company, 1997).

and

2)  Elizabeth Shown Mills, Editor, Professional Genealogy, A manual for Researchers, Writers, Editors, Lecturers and Librarians, (Baltimore, Genealogical Publishing Company, 2001)
