Everyone,
The College of Humanities and Sciences and the Department of History at
Virginia Commonwealth University invite you to join us for a free lecture
on Wednesday, December 6, 2006, at 7 p.m. at the VCU Commons Theater, 907
Floyd Avenue, First Floor
(http://www.vcu.edu/maps/acmap/unstucom/unstucom.htm ). Parking ($5) is
available at the adjacent Main Street Parking Deck.
Dr. Alan Taylor, author of American Colonies: The Settling of North
America, will speak on “Jamestown: A Continental Perspective.” Professor
Taylor will examine the Jamestown settlement in the context of
developments across North America, including the near-simultaneous
settlement of Quebec by the French and Santa Fe by the Spanish.
Taylor’s book, William Cooper’s Town: Power and Persuasion on the Frontier
of the Early American Republic, was awarded the Bancroft, Beveridge, and
Pulitzer Prizes in History. His most recent book is Divided Ground:
Indians, Settlers, and the Northern Borderland of the American Revolution.
A reception and book signing will follow the lecture. Come hear one of our
finest younger historians on a topic of general interest.
John Kneebone
