January 1, 2013 will be the 150th Anniversary of the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation. The Remembering Slavery, Resistance, and Freedom Project, a partnership of the Virginia General Assembly Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Commission, the College of William & Mary, and the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, aims to identify regionally-appropriate ways of commemorating this Sesquicentennial. These commemorations will honor the rich and complex lives, contributions, and sacrifices of enslaved and free Africans and African Americans, and will be designed to attract a broad audience of Virginians and visitors to the Commonwealth. We seek to highlight cemeteries of enslaved persons, buildings they constructed, and stories of resistance. Regional public forums are being held throughout Virginia to learn how communities wants to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. While the Project will learn from and be informed by all Virginia residents who participate in the meetings, we are committed to a community-engaged, descendant community-led model. We will foreground the themes, stories and programs identified by the African descended community to commemorate their ancestors’ emancipation.

We invite members of the listserv to attend a meeting in your region and to forward the meeting information to people who may be interested.
If you cannot attend a meeting, please contact us with any opinions regarding important cemeteries and sites that should be commemorated, or any themes you might consider important. Additionally, we would be happy to work with groups like historical societies, museums, and educational and religious organizations host a public meeting, if they are so interested.
