Did you know that the Pilgrims were not the first to celebrate Thanksgiving?
It was first started in Va. The good ship of Bristol called the Margaret
arrived in Jamestown on about Dec. 14, 1619. Instructions were given by the
Virginia Co. of London to Sir William Throckmorton, Richard Berkeley and others
that the day of the arrival was to be yearly and perpetually kept holy as a day
of thanksgiving to Almighty God. The first Thanksgiving service was held in
Va. nearly two years before that of the Pilgrim Fathers. It was held at the
plantation called Berkeley situated on the James River and named after Richard
Berkeley. Gov. Bradford was a Johnny-come-lately in Plymouth when he called
for Thanksgiving in 1621.
