I believe that as late as the sessions of the legislature in 1847, the VA law prohibiting marriage to one's brother or sister-in-law (called "artificial incest"), even after the death of the spouse had not yet been repealed.  If my memory serves me, it was in the following year that such repeal took place.

VA was the strictest of the Southern states in these matters.
