Did not know it had been reprinted; thanks, Don.

Comment to other searchers: the 128+- volumes of the "War of the Rebellion" available on CDs, printed form, and on the net, magnificent as it is, lists about 250,000 names, while approx. 3.2 million men served (and some women, as well), thus the researcher should not give up if a name of an ancestor is not found there.

Here is the URL for that searchable series on the net. You may need to cut and paste it to your browser. Good luck. Paul

For background information on Confederate units, you might try the following sources:

  1. The Virginia Regimental History Series, published by H. E. Howard, Lynchburg, Virginia. Most libraries have the series. Each book in the series gives the history of an infantry, cavalry, or artillery regiment, including personnel rosters.

  2. COMPENDIUM OF THE CONFEDERATE ARMIES: Virginia - Stewart Sifakis (1992) 2003, 5½x8½, paper, index, xii+288 pp., ISBN: 1-58549-701-0. This has just been reprinted. It gives a summary for each Confederate unit, including a list of battles participated in.
