TIME TO REGISTER FOR “RELIC AFTER DARK,” 



FEATURING MEGAN SMOLENYAK2, 



SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 29 



 



          The eighth annual “RELIC After Dark” will be held at Bull Run Regional Library on Saturday, September 29.  The featured speaker for the evening is renowned genealogist Megan Smolenyak2.   She is the author of six books, including Hey America, Your Roots Are Showing, and Who Do You Think You Are? (the companion book to the popular television series).  She has appeared on national television many times, solving forensic mysteries and tracing the ancestry of celebrities. For our program her talk will be “Cases That Made My Brain Hurt.”     



This gala event will last from 7 to 11 p.m.   The cost is $25 per person.  In addition to the featured speaker, it includes a hot buffet dinner with assorted beverages and desserts, an opportunity to learn about and use RELIC’s genealogical facilities, and complimentary printing from the library’s microfilm and electronic resources.  Space is limited so early registration is recommended.  We suggest dressy casual attire.  Checks should be made payable to Prince William Public Library System (or PWPLS), with “RELIC After Dark” on the memo line. RELIC PROGRAMS 



 



Here are our latest offerings.  Funding for RELIC programs is provided by the Friends of Central and Bull Run Libraries.  Sign language interpretation is available for Prince William Public Library programs if requested at least three weeks in advance. SECOND CAMPAIGN OF MANASSAS - AUGUST 1862 



Presented by Ron Mayer 



 



Military historian Ron Mayer will use visual aides to tell why and how the Second Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) occurred and to explain the ramifications of the actions of the two competing Generals, Lee and Pope.  This is the 150th anniversary of that major Civil War campaign. 



Ron Mayer is a retired Air Force officer, a member of the Bull Run Civil War Roundtable and founded the Heritage Hunt Civil War Discussion Group.  



            This program will be presented on Thursday, August 9, at 11 a.m. at Bull Run Regional Library and will last about an hour. GENEALOGY 101 



Presented by Beverly Veness 



 



Those curious about their family history have an opportunity to learn about methods, strategies and resources for tracing their roots at a free session sponsored by RELIC.  The hour-long program, conducted by Beverly Veness of the RELIC staff, is scheduled for Tuesday, September 18, 2012, at 7 p.m.  This program, “Genealogy 101,” will highlight the numerous free genealogical resources available at RELIC and will explore basic techniques for tracking ancestors. NEABSCO MILLS IRONWORKS 



Presented by Justin Patton 



 



Justin Patton, RPA, Prince William County Archaeologist, will summarize archaeological and historical investigations conducted on the historic area known as Neabsco Mills Ironworks, located on Neabsco Creek in eastern Prince William County. 



Owned and operated by the Tayloe family of Mount Airy plantation in Richmond County, Virginia, the Ironworks were an important part of the Chesapeake iron industry between the 1730s and the 1820s.  It represented the longest, continually operating iron furnace in Northern Virginia.  



Mr. Patton will also answer questions about archaeology in Prince William County.  This program will be presented on Tuesday, October 23, at 7 p.m. at Bull Run Regional Library and will last about an hour. “Genealogy Doctor” Accepting Appointments for Research Help 



 



Don Wilson, head of RELIC (the Ruth E. Lloyd Information Center for genealogy and local history at Bull Run Regional Library), sets aside time each month for  free private sessions to mentor persons researching their family history.  A thirty-minute session can be used to discuss and analyze an historical or genealogical problem that has stumped you.
