Dear Paul,
I have appreciated your scholarship and your willingness to freely
share the fruit of your work with others.
I am saddened to see you receive such an obviously unfair attack.
My goal here is to better understand my ancestors and their world,
which must include what is still our country's bloodiest war. When I
visit my graveyards, many of the stones are marked "CSA," and I am
proud of my Confederate ancestors. The War was horrible, but possibly
a necessity to resolve what was not settled in the original
constitution. There can be no 3/5's of a person. But the war is over.
What was done --- terrible things were done on both sides --- is
done. If we should learn anything, it is to treat each other better.
Let's do that on this list.
